“Nosedive” is a large-budget episode of the british anthology science fiction series “Black Mirror” directed by Joe Wright and Charlie Brooker. The whole series highlights topics related to society relationship with technology and this chapter is a criticism about social media, and the excessive importance of status. The cast is various, starring actors and actresses like Bryce Dallas Howard, Alice Eve and James Norton. The aesthetic, the bonding of the plot with the modern world and the soundtrack, composed by Max Richter, have received positive ratings and the episode has frequently been classified in the upper area of the lists.
The story is set in a world in which people can qualify and be rated by scores in social interactions and this rating structures all the society. Bryce Dallas Howard stars Lacie, a young woman obsessed with her grades. During her trip to attend a popular childhood friend’s wedding Lacie faces a series of unfortunate events and her personal qualification starts dropping. The story is based on how she faces what she thinks is her worst adversity and how she tries to climb up again in an unfair and unbalanced society.
The only fault I can find is that sometimes the plot is predictable. It would be better if there were more surprises and also if more non-stereotype characters appeared.
It’s a remarkable episode with a sharp criticism to society, complemented by a witty science fiction style. It’s ideal to watch it over and over again, and find different connotations every time. Really enjoyable for it’s scatching flow.
