FILM REVIEW – NOSEDIVE

Nosedive is the first episode of the third season of the British series Black Mirror. As
well as all the other episodes from Black Mirror, Nosedive criticizes our society and the
consequences of our actions. This episode, directed by Joe Wright, starts the American
actress Bryce Dallas Howard in the role of Lacie Pound.

The plot follows the life of the main character Lacie Pound who lives in a society where
people can rate each other from one to five stars for every interaction they have.
These ratings are important to most of the people because they have a socioeconomic
impact. Lacie found a way to increase her status by attending her fancy old friend’s
wedding as a bridesmaid. However, she became obsessed with the rankings and this
leaded to several mishaps on her way to the event.

What caught my attention was the outstanding performance that the protagonist,
Bryce Howard, made. The clothes worn in this episode are all pastel, which gives the
viewer a better understanding of the world Nosedive is set in. It is also very realistic,
because who wouldn’t worry about his score, if we lived in a society where your status
determines everything?

Nevertheless, it has a predictable plot. It is easy to see that if you become obsessed
with something, it will, most likely, have negative consequences in your life. In this
case, it was obvious that if Lacie hadn’t been so worried about her ratings, she
wouldn’t have turned crazy about it.

I would one hundred percent recommend it because it can help people see the
negative effects of social media and that not everybody’s life is how they make it look
like.
